Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra admits that after delivering the biggest box-office grosser, 3 Idiots (2009), every A-list star was ready to do Ferrari Ki Sawaari (FKS). He, too, had toyed with the idea of making this next film, revolving around a nine-year-old boy, with either Aamir Khan or ShahRukh Khan, who was the first choice for Munnabhai, playing the doting father in FKS.
“I was impressed with Aamir’s perfectionism in 3 Idiots. I knew Shah Rukh and liked his charm, and was a fan of Sharman (Joshi), after having seen him give a perfect take without any rehearsals as Raju Rastogi in 3 Idiots. Vinod gave me the freedom to decide on the cast,” says director Rajesh Mapuskar, admitting that while the Khans were big stars, Sharman came closest to the character every time he auditioned.
